Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
