On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
