The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
