A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by three suspects, with one shot at him before running away.

The purpose of the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested have been made, police said.

Authorities revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a location near the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the property managing the installation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, it was reported.

"The report indicates the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," an official report said.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what looked like a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and it was not a robbery during the attack.
